Natural Killer (NK) Cell

Natural Killer (NK) cell are a type of cytotoxic lymphocyte that are essential components of the innate immune system.
They function to eliminate virus-infected cells and tumor cells.

Unlike other immune cell, NK cell can recognize and destroy abnormal cells without prior sensitization or the need for antibody binding or MHC presentation.
This enables a rapid immune response, which is why they are referred to as “Natural killer.”

In normal conditions:

  • NK Cell represent approximately 15% of total lymphocyte
  • Their numbers tend to decline with age, which correlates with an increased risk of cancer
